Parole Denied in Cutler Shooting Death
Yesterday via video conference, TCDA prosecutors secured a 3-year denial of parole for Jose Luis Gonzalez, age 61. Gonzalez is currently serving a life sentence at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad for murder.
Just before noon on November 26, 2016, Gonzalez shot the adult male victim once in the chest outside of the victim’s apartment in Cutler. The victim’s roommate observed Gonzalez following the victim, who was clutching his chest and screaming. The roommate asked Gonzalez what happened, to which he replied “Nothing.” As the roommate called 911, Gonzalez fled. Through investigation, law enforcement located Gonzalez at a residence and took him into custody. Gonzalez told detectives that the victim had used his personal items and had insulted him.
On April 26, 2019, after being in custody since the crime, Gonzalez pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
This was Gonzalez’s first parole hearing. At the hearing, commissioners noted that he remains a risk to public safety. The Office of the District Attorney regularly attends life parole hearings and a deputy district attorney argued against the inmate’s release in this case.
