Criminal Charges Filed in Alleged Pistachio Theft
District Attorney Tim Ward has announced criminal charges related to the theft of 42,000 pounds of pistachios in the south county.
Alberto Montemayor, 35, is charged with grand theft of vegetables and fruits and receiving stolen property. The crimes allegedly were committed between May 19, 2021, and June 16, 2021. Each count is a felony. If convicted on both counts, Montemayor faces up to 3 years, 8 months in prison.
“Crime shouldn’t be a factor in the cost of doing business for Tulare County farmers and ranchers,” said Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward. “This industry is vital to the success and vibrancy of our community. Our office will continue to partner and train with law enforcement to make sure Tulare County agriculture stays at the top of global production. What we do here feeds the world.”
Montemayor is currently out of custody. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court on July 15, 2021.
