Life Sentence for 2023 Visalia Murder
Today in Department 11 of the Tulare County Superior Court, Visalia Division, the court sentenced Carlos Ayala, age 32, to life in prison for murder.
On April 8, 2023, Visalia Police Department officers responded to a shooting at a local convenience store. The adult male victim, who frequented the store in a wheelchair, had been shot five times. The victim died of his wounds later that night at the hospital.
Witnesses on scene directed officers to an adjacent residence where the shooter was seen fleeing. Shortly after, the defendant exited the rear of the residence and was identified as Ayala. As officers questioned him, Ayala became increasingly uncooperative and was detained. A search of the residence located a firearm and ammunition that matched spent casings found at the crime scene. Through investigation, it was learned that there was a history of conflict between Ayala and his family and the victim.
On August 19, 2025, Ayala pleaded no contest to second-degree murder with the use of a firearm. Ayala must serve 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole consideration.
The case was prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Jessica Weatherly and was investigated by the Visalia Police Department.
