Criminal Charges in South County Kidnapping
District Attorney Tim Ward has announced criminal charges against Makenzie Morrelli, age 29, and Kayla Williams, age 28, for an incident regarding two minor children that resulted in the issuance of an Amber Alert. The charges were filed on December 18, 2024.
It is alleged that just after midnight on December 16, 2024, in the Earlimart area, Morrelli, the children’s biological mother whose custody rights had been previously terminated, entered the residence of the children’s legal guardian and took the children with the assistance of Kayla Williams. An Amber Alert was issued approximately two hours later. Morrelli turned herself and the children into law enforcement at approximately 4 am.
Both Morrelli and Williams are charged with two felony counts of kidnapping, one count of felony first-degree burglary, and two felony counts of child stealing. If convicted, both face significant prison sentences based on the charges and special allegations, including prior criminal convictions. Prosecutors requested further information regarding two male suspects.
At arraignment, Morrelli pleaded not guilty. Bail is set at $100,000. A preliminary hearing confirmation is scheduled for December 31, 2024. Williams made $50,000 bail will return to court for an arraignment on January 9, 2025.
