Earlimart Man Denied Parole for 1983 Elder Abuse Attacks
On July 24, 2018, at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, a California parole board denied parole for Alfred Estrada, age 62, for a series of violent crimes, including murder, committed in September of 1983. Estrada was given a three- year denial and is not scheduled for another hearing until 2021.
On the evening of September 5, 1983, a man in Earlimart returned home and discovered his 79-year-old male roommate severely beaten on the living room floor. The back door was open, the telephone had been ripped off the wall, and the bedroom lock had beenpried open. The victim’s pants were pulled down and the pockets turned inside out. Thevictim bled to death internally from a ruptured kidney sustained by extreme external force. A few hours later in the early morning of September 6, a 71-year-old Earlimart man heard a knock on his door. As he approached, Estrada and another man entered by force. Estrada beat the man with a .22 rifle butt while the other man ransacked the house. After the two left, the victim was able to contact neighbors for help. In each case, the elderly victims were targeted by Estrada for robbery.
Estrada was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder, two counts of residential robbery, two counts of residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon (firearm), and that he inflicted great bodily injury. He was sentenced to 36-years-to-life in prison.
This was Estrada’s third parole hearing. The District Attorney’s Office routinely attendslife parole hearings and a Supervising Deputy District Attorney argued against theinmate’s release in this case.
